Flashing alternate indicators or hazard lights to say thankyou is becoming common in the UK. I first had it observed to me seven or eight years ago as a practice common amongst lorry drivers. Since then I have noticed it increasingly with lorries and also with regular road users.

While you don't do motorway driving as part of a basic test you do get to do plenty of dual carriageway lessons. I certainly didn't find my motorway lessons to be greatly different from dual carriageway lessons except that there were more lanes and I was taught about exiting/joining the roads and how to navigate by junction numbers. The actual rules about overtaking and lane-hogging were identical, except you could be overtaking two lanes of traffic instead of one.

When I learned to drive, the driving school was doing a promotion where they offered a couple of extra "advanced" lessons as freebies if you passed your test. I was taught the style of driving you attribute to the French during these sessions.

I'd suggest that, even though it's good practice, most people don't drive like that is because (in the UK at least) most people are never taught to drive on motorways. You can't drive on them before you pass your test and unless you have a special offer as I did most people stop learning what to do from that point on.

(Is it necessarily "socialist versus capitalist"? Anyway ... ) I am probably more "socialist" than you, but having said that I want to ask some questions about the minimum wage itself; to be more precise, one question: why?

Of course, of the two styles of driving, one is in fact illegal. A minor technical point that - it saddens me to say - only the French seemed to have registered ...

to play devil's advocate - would 'artificially' putting the pay levels up reflect one valuing people? Surely if one believed that people are good and productive one would be reassured they will earn good living. But if you expect most people to be able to do only lowest paid jobs then it would be showing them some form of valuation. ...

I was going to launch into some argument about valuing people more, but to be honest I can't be bothered, and my argument would just demonstrate my lack of understanding of economics!

Budget airlines are much tighter on excess baggage - it's one of the ways they make up for the discrepancy in costs. Having recently travelled myself by BA short haul (someone else was paying!), it's clear that the 'frilly' airlines are a lot more lax in applying luggage restrictions.

Just the sort of transnational comparative thought I would expect from our cosmopolitan pole!

I think this is as much about national myth-making as about reality - especially in a world where no upper class in any country still shapes social values or politics. So the traditional self-images remain, but the practice is increasingly out of kilter: Poles in the UK are renowned for their hard work (with one or two exceptions at Oxford, perhaps); scratch American society and there plenty of laziness and inherited wealth.

In the UK we have kept the value of not working too hard but lost the bit stressing that you have to be successful anyway...

It fascinating to read about going-home culture-shock. It has occurred to me a few times as we're becoming acclimatised to our place-of-exile that going home may be nearly as much of a shock.
